Your Child’s Closet: Organization Systems That Work

Frustration over a child’s lack of organization seems to be a universal parental complaint. Children tend to be messy by nature, and it can be a rude awakening to the parent who takes pride in keeping his or her surroundings neat and tidy! While it’s tempting to throw up your hands and declare the situation hopeless, working with your child to help him or her develop the skills necessary to keep a bedroom and closet neat will pay off in the long run.

#1 Make Sure the Closet Fits Your Child

For a child who is not as tall as an adult, a clothing rod placed overhead makes hanging clothing virtually impossible. Hang the rod at the appropriate height for your child; buying an adjustable rod ensures that as your tot turns into a teen, he or she will still be able to use the closet.

In addition to making sure that the rod is at the correct height, invest in smaller hangers for smaller clothing and check that drawers, hooks and cubbies are at a reachable height for your child.

#2 Purge Extra Belongings

You know how difficult it is to organize when you have too many items competing for space. It’s the same for your child. If the closet is overrun with too many shirts, pairs of pants, sweaters, hats, backpacks, shoes and other belongings, he or she is likely to just give up on the notion of keeping it all tidy.

Go through the closet with your child and determine how many of each type of item are needed. You can always rotate items in and out on a monthly basis if you want to. Try placing only two weeks’ worth of clothing in the closet so there isn’t an overwhelming selection. As a bonus, this will cut down on morning mayhem, since there will be fewer choices to consider.

#3 Make the Closet Appealing to Kids

Putting in some accessories and fun extras will make the closet more appealing for your child to use; this can increase the chances that he or she will actually put items away properly. At A Closet Gallery, we have a variety of kid-friendly colors and themes. Consider your child’s favorite colors and interests when choosing a custom closet.

Also, kid-friendly storage options will help. A shelf filled with colorful bins will allow your child to store hair accessories, baseball caps, socks, earrings and other small items neatly. Some kids prefer to hang sweatshirts on hooks, rather than on hangers; placing several hooks on one closet wall can help keep these items neat. Drawers can hold items like t-shirts and jeans more neatly than most children can keep them stacked on shelves or hung on hangers.

Please call A Closet Gallery to schedule a free consultation for a custom kids’ closet. We can show you and your child how a new closet organization system can help your family stay organized.
