The current limitations that we all face every single day is the amount of time we have. The difference that we all have is what we decide to do during those hours. If we think about it, many of those hours are spent getting ready, finding what you need and putting them back. What this article is going to cover is how to minimize the amount of time spent on these daily necessary tasks and create a time freedom you didn’t have before.

A great place to start is in your morning, which involves finding and choosing your outfit for the day. Believe it or not, you can save a good amount of time and reduce the stress, kick starting your day in the right foot.

Minimize and Eliminate Clutter

The first step that make all the other steps easier is to consolidate your inventory. The more you have to deal with, the more of a hassle it is. If you have items that you’re not using anymore for whatever reason, they should be removed from the closet. The easiest way to categorize your clothes in into 3 or 4 categories: Sell, Donate, Trash & Storage if applicable. The storage category are clothing items that are seasonal such as jackets and coats, or event-specific such as your wedding attire.

Closet Organizers that Functions

The next step is to make sure your closet is functional and have proper organizers. Organization requires that you have organizers in place - otherwise all of your clothes will just be on the floor. There are organizers that are optimally designed for specific categories of items - i.e jewelry drawers, belt & tie racks, pants rack, double hangers, etc.

For this reason, just having shelves and cabinets are not enough. Everyone’s needs are different and your lifestyle will be the determining factor whether you’re a business person or work from home, man or woman. The size of your inventory for specific categories also differ; maybe you have more dresses than pants or a bigger inventory of dress shirts and pants. Your closet may need an upgrade. It may be worth looking for a professional closet designer and installer in your area and if you’re lucky, you can get a free design at your home with the use of a 3D software.

Home for Every Item

Organized Custom Closet

When your possessions don’t have a default home to be stored, the amount of time spent finding, sorting and choosing can add up, not to mention the stress and mental clutter as a result. Make sure that every item in your room has a place to go back to. One of the main reasons why there is so much resistant to cleaning and clearing clutter is because you may not know where it goes and if you think about all of the other items that don’t have a home, it gets overwhelming, which makes not dealing with it a path of least resistance. Solve the core issue and watch your organization emerge from the ashes!

Realistic Habits that Are Simple & Sustainable

The final capstone to better closet organization is to establish simple habits that are sustainable for the long term. It’s easy to set unrealistic and idealistic habit goals but the success rate of that is pretty low. It’s time to establish habits that will help keep your closet maintained, clutter-free, and time-saving.

Here are some simple ones to implement right away. Every night, do 2 things: choose your clothes for the following day and set them aside, and put everything back to their default location and get rid of things that don’t belong. Choosing your clothes the night before saves you time and stress in the morning. Cleaning your room before bed allows your next day to start off fresh.

In the mornings, your clothes would have already been picked out so you won’t have to worry about that. If for any reason you have to pick out clothes and don’t have time to put it all back into the closet, fold them or neatly stack them on your bed so that when you get back or before bed, you’re likely to put them back where they belong versus creating a pile somewhere to deal with another day (which doesn’t usually happen). Simple, yet effective!

Take Action & Save Time

Implementing the steps above will not only save you time every day, but will decrease the stress and the mental roadrunner effect, where your mind never stops. Organization = less mental clutter.
