Moving Soon? Twenty Genius Ways to Make Your Relocation Easier

Moving can be a total drag, stressful and inconvenient, but it is also an exciting time! Starting over in a new home is an adventure and you shouldn't feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, so we have devised twenty genius ways to make your relocation easier!

1) Change Your Address Two Weeks Before Your Move!

Make sure you will get your mail at your new home! It is much easier to do this two weeks before your move out date.

2) Stock Up On Moving Supplies!

Collect boxes, bubble wrap, newspapers, labels, tape and a box cutter for your move! You will be happy you got these tools beforehand, rather than during the chaos of packing!


Get your moving supplies ready. You will need boxes, tape, bubble wrap, newspaper and a box cutter. Throw a sharpie in the mix too for bold labeling.

3) Start Packing One Room at a Time!

Don't get overwhelmed by trying to pack numerous rooms at once. A good standard is to pack up the least used rooms first and always consider what you will need at the new house. Check out these room by room moving tips.

4) Don't Pack Anything You Don't Use!

When sorting through your belongings, don't pack anything you don't absolutely love, need or use! The more stuff you decide to keep the more you will have to unpack. Take this opportunity to purge yourself of unnecessary belongings!

5) Defrost The Fridge!

Grab a cooler for any cold items you are moving and pack them up. Then clean out and defrost your fridge. You will want to do this to prevent mess and leaks!

Defrost and clean the fridge really well before moving, so you can start fresh at your new home.

6) Label Everything!

Make life easier and make a list of the number of boxes you have as you pack them. Keep this list handy with the box number and type of item in it, so you can be organized and unpack with ease. You won't have to worry about finding the bottle opener for a cold beer when you know it is in kitchen accessories box 101!

7) Move Closet Clothes Easier!

Make it easier on yourself to move clothes that hang in the closet. Shoe boxes, bins, and garbage bags will help with that!


Moving clothes this way keeps them clean and free from moving dust, plus you can easily stack them on on top of one another for a wrinkle free move!

8) Pack Your Plates Perfectly!

Pack up your dishes the right way. Use newspapers or an old phone book to wrap bowls and glasses with. You can stack plates on top of each other with a disposable foam plate between each one to keep them from chipping and breaking on the move.


Use foam plates to stack between your serving plates to prevent scratches and cracks.

9) Pack a New Home Essentials Box!

Go ahead a and pack yourself a box of items you know you will need the first night at your house. This includes your necessary hygiene items, cleaning supplies, etc. You may want to pack a box with overnight clothes and a change for the next day, as well as a separate box for tools that you'll need to put furniture back together. Once they're packed, set them to the side and pack them in a place you can easily get to.

10) Keep Jewelry from Tangling!

Use a toilet paper roll or paper towel roll to keep jewelry together and neat during the move. This allows you to easily hang them back up and not spend hours untangling necklaces. You can also use an egg carton for earrings! Genius!

11) Think Out of the Box!

Use items that can fit other things inside of them as packing tools. For instance knives can fit into oven mitts and taped at the bottom. You can use trash bags for blankets and even utilize your crock pot to store spices or other kitchen items. Pots and pans can be taped to hold kitchen items as well. Get creative!

12) Computer Check

To pack technology up can be a little daunting, especially if you have tons of cords to seperate. Take a picture of how the cords look before you unplug them for reference and then use a ziplock bag to store cords for each separate item. Tape the ziplock bag with computer cords to the computer, tape printer cords to printer, etc. Got it? Great!

13) Stretch Wrap Works!

You can use stretch wrap to keep boxes that go in the same rooms together and you can even use it to wrap like items together. Wrap long handled items like the mop and broom together or even use it wrap up the gardening tools.

14) Move Makeup Safely


Pack makeup with a cotton ball to prevent compacts, blush and powders from breaking.

15) Beer and Wine Crates Work Great!

Use beer or wine crates that have handles for moving heavy items like books. The handles make for easy grip and the with wooden crates you wont have to worry about all your books busting out of the bottom.

16) Get in Touch With Your Goodwill!

Arrange for Goodwill to come take away the things you don't want to move. After all the packing you are going to do, you will probably want to get rid of some things. Call Goodwill or a local charity to come pick up your unwanted items.

17) Hire a Nanny for Moving Day

Unless your kids are old enough to help, hire a nanny for moving day. Believe us, you will have a much easier time moving and unpacking boxes without your kids hanging onto your legs and demanding your attention. make it a fun playdate at a friends or an overnight stay with relatives, so you can have the time you need to get unpacked and organized most of the way!

18) Make Your Very Own Moving Day Box

Create a box with everything you will need for moving day. You will want scissors, cleaning supplies, waters, snacks, etc. Keep yourself extra hydrated and keep moving forward!

19) Call Your Friends, Bribe With Beer

Moving ain't easy, so call up your friends and offer to pay for their help in beer and pizza or whatever it is you know they'll love. Give them a big IOU and a hug with lots of thanks! Good friends will back you up and help pack you up!
