Is Professional Insight Important When Building a Custom Closet?

Custom Closet Planning

As professional closet designers with years of experience, we often steer our clients away from design elements that we know won’t work. While you, as a homeowner and user of the closet, have the most insight as far as what you want and how you will use the space, we have the experience and know-how to make it a feasible reality. If you are building your own custom closet, there are many things to think about as you put everything together. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  • All cabinets should have full backings.
If you are adding cabinetry to your closet, you aren’t going to want to deal with items falling behind it as the fake backing starts to bend or, worse, because there was no backing put up at all. Keep quality in mind, as well as how your usage of the closet components might impact them over time.
  • Make good use of your corners.
Your corners can lead to wasted space if they’re not handled well. If you have hanging rods that are perpendicular to one another, you might end up with some dead space in the corner if you don’t fill that area with something else.
  • Remember where the clothes are going to be, and what they will cover up.
It can be difficult to visualize exactly how much space your clothing will take up. For example, if you build shoe racks on the floor but they come up too high, the shoes on the top of the racks will end up covered by the hems of your clothing. Also, racks hung too close to the wall will result in clothing rubbing against the surface, while hanging them too far away from the wall will result in wasted space. Be sure that you measure carefully to avoid either of these scenarios.
  • Appearances count!
Your closet may be behind closed doors, but if you are planning on selling your home in the future, you will want it to exude the pride of homeownership. Use the best materials that you can afford, and make sure that the finish you choose complements the style of your home. Even if you aren’t planning on selling anytime soon, the point of a custom closet is to reduce your stress, so make it attractive and appealing to use!

Putting in your own custom closet requires a lot of consideration of all of the factors that make a closet successful. You might be surprised at how affordable a professional custom closet can be.
