Greet Your Visitors With a Well-Appointed Guest Room

Will you be welcoming overnight visitors this summer? While hosting guests can be fun and a great way to spend time with faraway family and friends, it can also be stressful as you try to prepare a pleasant, welcoming place for them to stay. In the weeks leading up to the visit, you can take just a little bit of time each day to devote toward getting the guest room and guest bathroom ready for them. Anticipating what they might need is one of the keys to making them feel comfortable, so take a look at these suggestions on preparing a guest room that will make your visitors feel right at home.

Prepare a Comfortable Place to Sleep

Cozy Guest Bedroom

The most important part of the guest room is the bed. After traveling and after fun days filled with adventure in a new (to them) place, your visitors are sure to want to get a good night’s sleep. Consider the sleeping arrangements ahead of time so you aren’t scrambling when they arrive. If you have a dedicated guest room, this is simple; simply make up the bed with fresh linens, fluff up the pillows and add an extra blanket.

If not, there are a few options you might consider. First, if you have a pull-out sofa or an air mattress, consider relocating one of your children to this sleeping area and giving the child’s bed (provided it’s an adult size!) to your visitors. If that’s not an option, adding an egg-crate topper to the mattress can make it a bit more comfortable. Finally, if there’s time, consider having a Murphy bed installed. A wall bed folds down and is the same size as a regular bed; it also has a comfortable mattress. Best of all, it folds up against the wall and provides extra storage space when it’s not in use. Transform any room into a guest room with one of these beds.

Think Ahead to What They Might Need

One of the more stressful parts of being away from home is not having all of the comforts that you’re used to. If you were traveling and forgot your toothpaste or had nothing to read, you might feel awkward asking your hosts if you could borrow something. This is where you, as the host, come in.

Spacious Guest Bedroom

Think about all of the items that you normally use as part of your daily routine and make a list. Over the next few weeks, pick up trial-sized packages of these items during your regular grocery shopping. For example, grab a small bottle of contact lens solution, a couple extra toothbrushes, a few magazines, hair elastics and safety pins. For the guest bathroom, buy full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner and a bottle of body wash. Place all of these items in a pretty basket or bin, or place them all in the linen closet (and tell your guests that they’re for their use).

On the day before your visitors arrive, vacuum their bedroom one last time, make sure the bathroom is sparkling clean, and relax, knowing that you have accounted for everything they might need for their comfort.
