Having a cluttered, disorganized home can make for a stressful living environment. When your house is not very large, it makes home organization feel more daunting. How do you go about decluttering and organizing your home?

Maximizing a tight space can make your home feel more inviting and larger. You need to go through each room and focus on areas where clutter tends to pile up. Kitchen cabinets, bedroom storage, bathroom clutter, living room chaos, and limited laundry space are where you should be focusing.

In this article, you will learn about creative ways to organize your home.

Kitchen

Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen is one place where homes can get cluttered and disorganized. When you begin organizing your kitchen space, take the time to purge storage areas of unused gadgets, and toss out any old food that needs to be thrown out.  After you remove all of the unnecessary items and junk, it is time to determine how to best organize your stuff.

MyMove.com suggests that pot racks are a great way to store and display your pots and pans. The racks hang from the ceiling and allow you to see your collection without having to rummage around in a dark cupboard. It also frees up under-counter cabinets for other items and gives you a little more room in a possibly, already tight area.

While pot racks hold all of your pots and pans, they don't hold your pot lids. Having a lid organizer will help keep them neat for you. If you lack space or want a more convenient way to find your lids, consider using hooks on the back of your cabinet doors. Place two hooks close enough together so that the pot lids slide down into the clips. These keep them out of the way and right at your fingertips.

Finding things at the back of the cabinet is a struggle everyone goes through at some point. There are a couple of ideas that you can use to get to the items at the back without strain. One way is to use a Lazy Susan for specific items, such as spices. The turntable allows you to easily access all of your spices without having to dig. Another way is to use plastic bins that you can remove from the cabinet to access everything. The containers work well for smaller and larger items, and you can label them to know which bins you need to grab.

Keeping cleaning supplies in order under the sink is often a trial. Use a tension mounted curtain rod to create a place to hang your spray bottles. You could also use bins or small shelves to organize things easier. Curtain rod hangers and wooden dowels can also be combined to make a garbage bag dispenser, which looks very similar to a paper towel holder. Put the hooks on your cabinet wall, push the dowel through the roll of trash bags, and then place the dowel on the hooks.

Bedroom

Bedroom

With the kitchen organized, it is time to focus your attention on the rest of the house. The bedroom is sometimes overlooked. You don't have to fear organizing your room. A well-organized bedroom not only makes it easier to find items but also a relaxing retreat.

Your bedroom may not have a lot of space, but there are always ways to store items, especially those you don't use often. Under the bed is a great way to contain winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter. There are many different types of boxes designed to fit under the bed. Most have lids or flaps to help keep the contents from getting dusty. While they are great for cycling your wardrobe, they can hold countless other items to organize your space.

There are other ways to store items in your room and closet. If you have a lot of jewelry, there is a way to keep it and display it simultaneously. Use a corkboard and give it a decorative frame. Hang your necklaces and earrings on pins. You get to store your favorite pieces where they are easily accessible and can also make a stunning piece of art.

Shoe racks are standard in most closets, but that’s not your only option. Use pegs on the back of your closet doors to hang a shoe organizer. It frees up floor space and helps to keep things nice and tidy.

For those with hats and scarves, consider using your wall space for added storage. Using hat racks or hooks, you can hang your favorite outerwear accessories. Hooks on the closet wall behind your hanging clothes can also store seldomly-used items or extra handbags.

When organizing your bedroom closet, take the opportunity to clean out space by getting rid of clothing articles you no longer wear and organize your remaining clothes. Note: Booklovers can make their bookcases do double duty. Instead of using a traditional nightstand, which will be cluttered with samples from your reading list, use a bookcase as your nightstand. The wider top gives you plenty of room for a lamp, clock, and your latest read. You can then organize the shelves so that the next books on your list are close at hand.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are usually small and crowded thanks to the number of people trying to use them. If you have more than one child, the chaos escalates quickly.

According to TheSpruce.com, hanging fruit baskets can help to organize the kids' bath items. By hanging the baskets from the shower rod, you can put toys and other bath related items in them. It keeps the area organized; it also helps them to dry after each bath.

Small shelves with drawers can also help make your counters less cluttered. Each child can have their own drawer to keep items like combs/brushes, toothpaste, and hair ties. If you don't have a lot of counter space, using baskets under the counter can help organize items in the same manner.

Over the door shoe organizers yet again, provide ample storage for small items. You can use them to organize makeup and brushes and store hair combs, jewelry, and even scarves or belts.

Organizing medicine bottles so that they are out of children's reach can be challenging in a small bathroom. Installing floating shelves can help to mitigate the problem, but they don't always stay organized. Instead, install a mirror with storage space behind it. Not only does it keep medicine out of the reach of small hands, but it also keeps any clutter out of sight.

Living Room

Living Room

It doesn't take long for the living or family room to become a living nightmare of chaos. It is one of the rooms where your family hangs out the most. Use some of these ideas to keep your living area from looking like a disaster area.

  • Use multi-purpose furniture to contain some of the mess. Ottomans and sofas with storage under the cushions are a great way to manage some of the clutter without wasting space.
  • Baskets are your friend and come in a multitude of sizes.  They work well to hold the kids' and pets' toys and extra blankets that may be thrown around your living room.
  • Invest in cubbies. Cubbies can hold books, DVDs, or toys. They can also work to store your electronic equipment such as gaming systems and DVD players. You can add baskets to keep cords and small toys out of sight.
  • Add a charging station. These stations sometimes have slots to give you a place to store your phones and tablets while they are charging. It also gives you a central location where the kids must put their electronics at bedtime.

Laundry Room

Laundry Room

Your laundry area would be spacious in an ideal home and have plenty of cabinets to store supplies and rails to hang clothes. Sadly, not all laundry areas are a full room equipped to handle all of your laundry needs. Sometimes, instead, they are nooks that are left with little to no storage.

To compensate, add some storage shelves or cabinets to the space to help organize your detergent, softener, and other laundry cleaning supplies. If you don't want a shelf, you can hang a basket on the wall to hold these items.

If space allows, add a tension-mounted rod to your laundry room, allowing you to hang clothes as they come out of the dryer or finish drying for those delicate items.  You should also consider adding a counter space or small table, if possible, to give yourself a place to fold clothes as they finish drying.

Conclusion

By tackling the problem areas throughout your Sacramento home, you can create a less stressful environment. Remember, each room of the house has its own issues. Using hooks, baskets, tension mounted rails, and cubbies can make all the difference in maximizing space.
